MARSHALL — Construction on a new Harbor Freight Tools store has begun inside the former Shopko building in Marshall, company spokespeople said this week.

On Tuesday, Harbor Freight formally announced it would be opening a store in the community, and would begin hiring for 25 to 30 jobs.

The announcement didn’t give a specific date that the new store would open. However, Harbor Freight spokespeople said the opening is planned sometime this spring.

“We’ve been looking to open a location in Marshall for a number of years so that we can provide tools and equipment at tremendous values to the community,” said Trey Feiler, senior vice president of real estate and construction for Harbor Freight Tools. “In addition to finding a great location, we were attracted by the availability of great associates in the Marshall area, and we look forward to having them join the Harbor Freight team.”

Harbor Freight spokespeople first confirmed plans to come to Marshall in January. The Marshall location will be the tool and equipment retailer’s first store in Lyon County. Currently, the closest Harbor Freight location to Marshall is in Willmar.

Woodcrest Capital, the current owners of the Shopko property, is also looking for other commercial tenants for the building in addition to Harbor Freight.

No additional tenants have been announced yet, but Marshall EDA Director Lauren Deutz said Wednesday that Woodcrest Capital is taking the lead in working with potential tenants.

The former Shopko location in Marshall has been vacant since 2019 when the retail chain went into liquidation.

Harbor Freight Tools is a family-owned company, founded in California in 1977. Today, Harbor Freight has more than 1,400 stores across the country, company spokespeople said.
