MARSHALL -- The Marshall City Council this week approved a change order to a recently-completed project adding pedestrian crossings outside Marshall schools. The change was a net increase of about $15,000 from the project's original contract, city staff said.

At Tuesday's city council meeting, council members considered both a final payment request and a final change order for the school crossing project.

The project, which was completed last fall, added flashing crossing beacons, pedestrian islands, and ADA-compliant ramps outside four schools in Marshall. The crossing updates were built outside Park Side Elementary, Southview Elementary, Marshall Middle School, and True Light Christian School.

"This project started numerous years ago, probably six years ago, with grant applications and working out agreement with the schools to participate," said Marshall Public Works Director Jason Anderson. "I think it went pretty well all in all. It went a little later than we would have liked and we had to work on that, but it was a good project."

With the final pay request, Anderson said, "You have a total contract of $495,278.67, which is an increase of a little over $15,000 from the original contract amount."

Materials in the council agenda packet for Tuesday's meeting said the change order was the result of final measurements and changes in item quantities during construction.

Anderson said the city received a $384,000 Transportation Alternatives grant for the project, and the city's portion of the $120,000 local cost would be covered by the city's Municipal State Aid Street account.

"The schools each paid a participating share in this project. The total share of all the schools combined was a little over $43,000," Anderson said.

Council members didn't have much discussion on the change order and final pay request. The council voted unanimously to approve the change order and pay request.
