Lyon Co. OKs funding for Ghent projects

MARSHALL — Updates to the city of Ghent’s fire hall and city offices, and a storm sewer project planned for this summer, are the latest area projects to get funding from federal stimulus dollars.

On Tuesday, Lyon County commissioners approved a request from the city of Ghent for a total of $200,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funds that will be used for a few different projects.

Ghent City Clerk/Administrator Dawn Vlaminck gave an overview of the proposed projects for the commissioners. Vlaminck said about $36,000 of the total request would be for a new ADA-compliant ramp at the entrance of Ghent’s city hall.

“We’ve been budgeting for this for the past couple of years,” Vlaminck said.

However, with increases in the cost of building materials, the city had fallen short in funding for the ramp construction.

The request also included $99,000 for safety and accessibility improvements at City Hall. The city of Ghent had already used a significant portion of its own ARPA funds to build a decontamination area for the Ghent Fire Department — and in the construction process, found deficiencies in the ceiling rafters in the City Hall meeting room, Vlaminck said.

The county ARPA funding would help replace the rafters, as well as bring the building into ADA compliance, she said.

Another part of the request was $45,000 to help fund a storm sewer project in Ghent’s Bluebird subdivision. The drainage project is planned to start construction this summer.

“This is basically a flood mitigation project for us,” Vlaminck said. The storm sewer updates would help control stormwater flow during heavy rains, and prevent flooding in the subdivision. Vlaminck said the project was being funded through a TIF district, but the city was short of the amount needed to fully fund the improvements.

Finally, the list of requests included $20,000 for items for the Ghent Fire Department, including a new furnace for the fire hall, a new fire engine deck gun and a water auger.

Commissioners approved Ghent’s request.

Last year, the county had set aside a total of $1.9 million in ARPA funding for 11 cities in Lyon County, as well as up to $65,000 for each of the ambulance services in the county. Area ambulance services and several area cities have already had funding requests approved, for items ranging from chest compression devices for CPR, to new firefighting equipment, and water and sewer updates in cities like Russell, Minneota and Lynd. Commissioners also approved funding for a new county-wide emergency radio paging system.

Starting at $3.95/week.
