Tow truck drivers ‘a little bit busy’

Slippery conditions send vehicles into ditches

MARSHALL — Blowing snow and slippery roads made driving difficult in parts of southwest Minnesota on Thursday evening.

Although the weather wasn’t as extreme as it was during the blizzards of a couple weeks ago, there were still some reports of vehicles in the ditch in the Marshall area.

Things were “a little bit busy” for Pulver Towing on Thursday night, said Darcy Beek. She estimated that Pulver responded to about 10 or 12 calls. However, she said, “It was nothing compared to the storm right before Christmas.”

There were some accidents in southwest Minnesota late Thursday night and early Friday morning, said Sgt. Troy Christianson of the Minnesota State Patrol. The State Patrol reported a total of seven vehicles off the road in the Marshall district between midnight and 9 a.m. Friday. In addition, one property damage crash and one jackknifed semi truck were reported.

There’s still a possibility of hazards from slippery roads and snow over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service office in Sioux Falls. In areas with a deep snowpack, drifting snow will be possible. Temperatures Saturday and Sunday are also predicted to be in the 30s during the daytime and below freezing at night. There’s a chance for snow on the roads to melt in the afternoon and freeze again in the evening, creating icy patches.

On Monday, there will also be chances for more snow or mixed precipitation in southwest Minnesota, the NWS said. At this point, the exact track of the winter weather system bringing the precipitation is not known, and the NWS is encouraging the public to monitor the forecast for more information.

Starting at $3.95/week.
