Work group shares priorities for Lyon Co. fairground updates

MARSHALL — Improvements to bathroom facilities, electrical updates and grandstand maintenance are all high priorities for the Lyon County fairgrounds, according to a working group of community and fair board members.

Roger Schroeder presented the working group’s comments to Lyon County commissioners on Tuesday. Earlier this fall, a group including fair board members, county commissioners and community members met to discuss what updates were most needed at the fairgrounds.

Schroeder said the group came up with a list of six priorities for possible fairground updates.

“I think they’ve provided great content for things for us to consider,” Schroeder said.

One of the first priorities the work group brought forward was bathroom improvements at the fairgrounds.

“This group came up with several alternatives to consider,” including renovating existing bathrooms or building new facilities, Schroeder said.

Other priorities on the list included improving the electrical infrastructure and lighting at the fairgrounds; maintenance on the grandstand roof; building a new animal barn; building a permanent stage at the hoop barn; and adding new paving at the fairgrounds. Schroeder said connecting areas of existing pavement would help make the fairgrounds more accessible to people using wheelchairs.

The work group also made a list of possible stakeholders that might be interested in supporting improvement projects. The list included large employers, community service organizations, agricultural businesses, and other groups that could potentially use the fairgrounds for community events.

While the group’s recommendations were focused on future fairgrounds projects, county commissioners did take action on getting a new transformer for the fairgrounds.

In November, the fair board had brought forward a proposal to install fairground updates that would include a transformer and electrical outlets for campers.

On Tuesday, commissioners voted to get a quote for the transformer from Marshall Municipal Utilities.

Starting at $3.95/week.
