MARSHALL — It was a great day for some Halloween fun. On Saturday afternoon, Marshall’s downtown was full of kids in costume as trick-or-treaters headed to local businesses. Families also made sure to stop at spots like the Lyon County Museum, and the trunk or treat event outside Cornerstone Church.
“It’s nice coming here every year,” said Carlos Rojas. Besides trick-or-treating with his family, Rojas took his shot at scoring a goal in a hockey-themed carnival game in the church parking lot.
Having a warm, sunny day and a lot of activities to choose from likely encouraged families to attend local Halloween events over the weekend, participants said.
“It’s been pretty busy,” said Tessa Sanow. Sanow was handing out candy to a steady crowd of children and families on Main Street on Saturday.
“There’s a lot going on today. I think everyone is making the rounds. And the weather’s beautiful,” said Lyon County Historical Society Director Jennifer Andries.
“It’s a really good event to do all at the same time,” said Kristen Doughty, who was helping at the Cornerstone trunk or treat. There were a few different trick-or-treating events that started around the same time in Marshall, which made it easy for families to go from one to the other, she said. Events like the Residence HALLoween at Southwest Minnesota State University and the harvest festival at Open Door Church also kept the fun going later Saturday afternoon.
“For us, it’s something for the community to do,” Doughty said of the festivities. It was good to be able to participate and support the community, she said.
Andries said there was a lot of participation at the museum’s Halloween fun day, as well. There were people waiting for the museum to open that afternoon, she said. Kids could earn prizes by counting the pumpkins they saw hidden around the museum exhibits.
Although Saturday was busy, Halloween festivities aren’t over yet in Marshall. This afternoon and evening, there are a few more events scheduled. Kids are invited to come to Hill Street Place’s Halloween parade event, which runs from 4-5:30 p.m. St. Stephen Lutheran will be holding a trunk or treat event starting at 5:45 p.m. in the church parking lot, and a Halloween-themed planetarium show will start at 7 p.m. at Southwest Minnesota State University.
