Lyon County sets 4.3% preliminary levy increase

MARSHALL — This week, Lyon County commissioners approved a preliminary 2023 levy of about $15.5 million.

The levy would be an increase of 4.305% from 2022. However, commissioners and county staff said it was likely that increase would change between now and the end of the year, when the county sets a final levy and budget.

Counties are required to set a preliminary levy by the end of September. The final levy can be lower than the primary levy amount, but not higher.

In previous discussions of the county budget process, Lyon County Administrator Loren Stomberg said the county had been facing financial uncertainties like inflation and high fuel costs, as well as some staff turnover.

At Tuesday’s regular county board meeting, Stomberg said the proposed 4.3% levy increase was the same as had been brought forward in earlier budget discussions this year.

“We know that number will change,” he said, as the county gets closer to a final budget and levy.

Commissioners approved the preliminary levy, but also said the county needed to watch its spending.

Commissioner Charlie Sanow said over the past six months he had heard concerns from Lyon County taxpayers who are on fixed incomes, and also dealing with the affects of inflation. Sanow said taxpayers were “very concerned about us just going off the rails.”

“We need to take a good look at what we’re spending,” he said.
