Shades of the Past car club visits seniors

MARSHALL — A 1969 Ford Mustang was parked in front of Heritage Pointe Senior Living and resident Ray Hlavka was curious enough to check it out.
The owner of the classic car, Tyler resident Mark Enemark, was nearby.
“My dad bought it in ’69,” Enemark told Hlavka. “It’s been in my family since then. And we drove it for 11 years as a family car. In 1981 he (his father) went to trade it off for a Chevy Citation and they would only give him $1,500. He said, ‘I think I’ll just keep it.’ Thank God he kept it.”
After listening to Enemark’s story, Hlavka smiled with approval.
“Now it’s worth some money,” Hlavka said.
“Yeah, more than $1,500,” Enemark said.
Enemark, a Shades of the Past car club member, then pointed to another vehicle in the parking lot.
“Look over there. That’s an Oldsmobile,” he said.
“I think I had one like that a long time ago,” Hlavka said.
A lot of those type of conversations took place Wednesday after various senior living locations in Marshall. Every year at this time, Shades of the Past members drive their classic vehicles to Morningside Heights, Boulder Estates, Heritage Pointe and Hill Street Pace. Root beer floats were served and the residents are able to look at the vehicles and get rides in them.
“It’s fantastic,” Hlavka said.
