Roof damage forces temporary closure of Cottonwood Post Office
COTTONWOOD — Roof damage led the Cottonwood Post Office to close to the public over the weekend. Now, customers will need to travel to a nearby city to pick up their mail.
In a Saturday news release, the U.S. Postal Service said the closure would be temporary, but there was not a timetable yet for the Cottonwood office to reopen. The release said Cottonwood customers could pick up mail, packages, and P.O. box mail at the Hanley Falls Post Office instead.
The closure will not affect mail delivery to the Cottonwood service area, a USPS spokesman said Monday.
In a notice placed in the window of the Cottonwood Post Office over the weekend, Postmaster Johanna Leysen said a ceiling collapse in the post office was the reason for the closure. In the news release, the USPS said the building’s roof had been damaged by heavy rains, which led to flooding.
The USPS said no mail had been damaged by the flooding, and no injuries had been reported.
Customers who have a P.O. box in Cottonwood can pick up their mail at the Hanley Falls Post Office, which is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays, Leysen said.
The USPS said Cottonwood customers whose mail is on hold will also be able to pick up their mail on Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Hanley Falls Post Office lobby.
