More storms forecast for region tonight
Flood warning in effect for Redwood River near Marshall
MARSHALL — Another round of severe weather is headed for southwest Minnesota tonight, according to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls. Storms are expected to develop west of I-29 in the late afternoon, and move quickly into Iowa and southwest Minnesota. The NWS is warning that storms could include widespread damaging wind with gusts of up to 80 miles per hour, hail up to ping-pong ball size, and isolated tornadoes.
A flood warning is also in effect for the Redwood River in Lyon County this weekend, the NWS said. The river was observed at a stage of 12 feet early Thursday morning in Marshall. The river level is expected to rise above its flood stage of 14 feet on Thursday evening, and crest at a level of 14.9 feet Friday afternoon. Water levels would fall below flood stage on Saturday, the forecast said.
The flood warning will be in effect through Sunday morning.
Cities across the region reported hail and heavy rain on Wednesday. Lyon County emergency management director Amber Scholten said the city of Balaton’s lift stations couldn’t keep up with the sudden amount of water, and additional pumps had to be used.
In Minneota, local police issued a temporary no-travel advisory due to flooding in the streets. Access to K.P. Kompelien Field was temporarily closed due to high water levels in the south branch of the Yellow Medicine River.
On Thursday, the city of Cottonwood also made sandbags available to residents in case of more flooding. Both Cottonwood and Minneota were providing a roll-off trash container for disposal of items damaged by flooding or sewer backups.
