Lyon Co. approves Tracy museum drainage request

MARSHALL — Supporters of the Wheels Across the Prairie Museum in Tracy have been looking for a way to help address problems with flooding at the museum property. After action by the Lyon County Board earlier this week, the museum will be able to make some drainage improvements.

On Tuesday, county commissioners approved about $14,600 in funding to install an eight-inch private drainage tile line that would run into County Ditch 36.

Lyon County planning and zoning administrator John Biren and Garry Hippe of the Wheels Across the Prairie Museum brought the request to commissioners at their regular board meeting.

“Wheels Across the Prairie has had a lot of drainage issues in the past and they’ve done a lot of building up of structures and upgrades out there,” Biren said. “This project would provide them an outlet to adequately drain the buildings around there.”

The proposed tile line would run under a county road and into an outlet structure on CD 36.

Biren said the museum already pays benefits into the CD 36 system. They would not be seeking to change the ditch benefits for the tile project. Biren said the museum is also seeking permission from a neighboring landowner to have the tile line cross their property.

“How are you proposing to pay for it?” Commissioner Steve Ritter asked.

Biren said the funding for the drainage project could come from the county’s buffer funding. Commissioner Rick Anderson said production tax revenue could also possibly be used to help fund the drainage project.

Commissioners voted to approve the funding request for the drainage project.
