Easter, Minnesota-style

Chilly temperatures didn’t stop the fun at family Easter events

With temperatures in the 30s on Sunday morning, it might not have felt much like spring. But a little cold didn’t stop the kids lined up for the Easter egg hunt outside Grace Life Church in Marshall. Besides, they said, running to fill your Easter basket warms you up.

“When you go that fast, it doesn’t bother you,” said Lincoln Schuelke. When organizers yelled, “Go!” his strategy was to head for the far side of the field scattered with plastic eggs. “There was a pile of them way out back.”

Easter egg hunts and other family events were held around the Marshall area over the weekend. Some event organizers stuck with outdoor egg hunts, while others changed their plans slightly because of the cold weather. On Saturday, members of the Milroy Lions and the Milroy PTO held a morning of crafts and games, along with an egg hunt, at the Milroy school.

“We’ve been doing the egg hunt for many years, and this is only the second time we’ve ever done it indoors,” said Lions member Dan Leach. Normally, it would be warmer outside this late in the season, he said.

Families still came out to have fun at the event. A total of 52 kids rushed across the Milroy gymnasium and down one of the school hallways, grabbing plastic eggs with candy and prize tickets inside.

“The turnout is really good for Milroy,” Leach said of the annual event.

On Sunday, volunteers at Grace Life planned to hold their Easter Egg hunt outdoors. While the morning was overcast and chilly, the snow Marshall saw on Sunday hadn’t started falling yet. Organizers were able to scatter thousands of candy-filled eggs across the grass and ball fields outside the church.

“We got together to fill the eggs, a bunch of us ladies,” said Lois Johnson. Before the egg hunt, different groups of volunteers each took a batch of Easter eggs to fill with goodies and a few special prize tickets. Johnson said the group she was part of was able to fill around 1,500 eggs in about an hour.

“We had a lot of fun,” she said.
