Planning a big move

Habitat For Humanity of Redwood River to relocate Marshall home

The house will be headed for property Habitat purchased on Brussels Court in December.

MARSHALL — For years, they’ve helped families build new homes in Marshall. But this spring, Habitat For Humanity of Redwood River will be trying something different.

Habitat For Humanity of Redwood River announced this week that it plans to move a two-story house currently located on Village Drive to a lot on Brussels Court on the other side of Marshall. The house will be lifted and transported to Brussels Court later this spring, said Habitat Executive Director John Tramm.

“We had been looking for an opportunity in Marshall,” Tramm said.

Then the owners of Suite Liv’n Apartments in Marshall offered to donate a house that stands on property on Village Drive, he said. Suite Liv’n is making room for a planned new apartment building at that location.

The city of Marshall and the Marshall EDA are also helping to make the project possible, Tramm said.

In December, Habitat bought the land on Brussels Court for $1.

“Habitat is grateful for the generosity shown by the owners of Suite Liv’n Apartments and the city of Marshall and EDA. This project is a great opportunity for us to partner together to meet the needs of our community,” said Tramm.

“As the owners of Suite Liv’n, we believe in the Marshall community and are excited to put feet to our desire to invest back into the community,” said Gabe Olson.

Habitat plans to break ground for the project in April. Thein Movers of Clara City has been contracted to move the house by the end of May, Tramm said.

Once the house is moved, it will be renovated alongside a partner family. Tramm said the house will get new doors and windows, a new furnace and drywall work.

Habitat For Humanity of Redwood Falls said the new house project will be funded in part by grants from Great Western Bank and the US Bank Foundation. Each organization awarded Habitat a $10,000 grant.

However, one important piece of the project is still missing, Tramm said.

“We’re actively seeking a homeowner applicant,” he said.

Habitat is currently seeking applications from people who live or work in Lyon County, have a demonstrated need for affordable home ownership, and are willing to partner with Habitat to work on the project.

Interested Lyon County residents can call Habitat’s office at 507-337-9735 for more information.

Starting at $3.95/week.
