Netzley signs to U of Kentucky

By Deb Gau 1 min read

MARSHALL -- Family and friends gathered around Marshall High School senior Holly Netzley last Wednesday morning as Netzley signed a recruitment pledge for the University of Kentucky speech and debate team.

"I'm so pumped," Netzley said. "Kentucky has definitely been my top pick school for a long time."

Having a signing ceremony for a speech and debate recruit is something new at MHS. But Netzley said she hoped it would encourage more people to check out an activity she's enjoyed competing in throughout high school.

"I love speech so much. It's where my heart is," Netzley said.

As part of the Marshall Tiger speech team, Netzley has competed in a variety of interpretive categories, including extemporaneous reading, prose interpretation and duo interpretation. When she goes on to compete as part of the University of Kentucky speech and debate team, she will be heading into new territory -- public forum debate.

"It will definitely be a challenge. But I'm excited for it," she said.

Netzley said she plans to study political science at the University of Kentucky.
