Lyon Co. extends law enforcement contract with city of Lynd

By Deb Gau 2 min read

MARSHALL -- The city of Lynd will continue to contract with the Lyon County Sheriff's Office for law enforcement coverage over the next three years. Lyon County commissioners approved an extension of the law enforcement contract on Tuesday.

The contract extension would run from Jan. 1, 2022 through Dec. 31, 2024. The Lynd City Council approved the extension in October.

Under the contract, the city of Lynd would receive 15 hours per week of law enforcement coverage. The cost for the law enforcement services would be $51.44 per hour in 2022, which is a rate increase of 1.5% from 2021. Under the contract extension, the hourly rate would go up to $52.21 in 2023 and $53.25 in 2024.

The rate increases for the next three years were approved by county commissioners in June. At that time, Sheriff Eric Wallen had said the Sheriff's Office needed to factor in inflation for the costs of providing law enforcement services to Lyon County cities.

The Sheriff's Office currently contracts with the cities of Cottonwood, Ghent, Lynd, Russell and Balaton for law enforcement patrols. The five cities don't have police departments of their own.

The overall cost of law enforcement contracts for cities in Lyon County varies, depending on the number of hours per week that deputies patrol the city. Wallen said the Sheriff's Office calculates a minimum average of weekly patrol hours based on a community's size. Lynd falls into a population range of 401 to 550 people.
