One hurt in Farmers Co-op of Hanska blast

No foul play suspected in Christensen Farms explosion

NEW ULM, SLEEPY EYE — The New Ulm Fire Department released a statement on the June 1 explosion at the Farmers Cooperative of Hanska Burdick Division elevator.

The explosion occurred after 6:30 p.m. New Ulm Fire Department (NUFD) and New Ulm Police Department (NUPD) were dispatched at 6:37 p.m.

According to the press release, one person was injured as a direct result of the blast. The injured person was responsive to first responders and was transported to a local hospital.

The incident is under investigation by the NUFD and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office.

NUFD, Sleepy Eye Fire Department, NUPD, Brown County’s Sheriff’s Office, Nicollet County Sheriff’s Office, State Patrol and Allina Medical Transportation responded to the explosion. Fire crews were on scene for approximately four hours. Damage is being assessed.

NUFD and NUPD continue to monitor the scene.

The Brown County Sheriff’s Office reported no suspected foul play was involved in the June 1 grain elevator explosion at the Christensen Family Farms feed mill east of Sleepy Eye.

The value of the damage done by the explosion is undetermined at this time, according to a Brown County Sheriff’s Office news release.

No injuries were reported in the explosion reported at 4:45 a.m. Responding agencies included Sleepy Eye, New Ulm, Springfield, Hanska and Comfrey Fire Departments, the Brown County Sheriff’s Office and Sleepy Eye Police.

The incident is being investigated by the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office.
