Minneota man killed in crash

Head-on collision involves SUV, two motorcycles

MARSHALL — A crash that killed one Minneota resident and injured two other people is being investigated by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.

An SUV and two motorcycles were involved in a head-on collision Tuesday night at the intersection of Lyon County Road 6 and 310th Avenue, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The crash was reported around 8:15 p.m. First responders found one motorcyclist, Peter Haugen, 44, of Minneota, had sustained severe traumatic injuries in the crash. Haugen was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second motorcyclist, 41-year-old Frederick Day, of Minneota, and the driver of the SUV, 27-year-old Taylor Schmidt, of Tracy, were treated for injuries sustained in the crash, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, Sheriff Eric Wallen said in a news release. Alcohol is not suspected as a contributing factor in the crash, he said.

The Marshall Fire Department, North Memorial Ambulance, the Minnesota State Patrol and the Lyon County Coroner’s Office all responded to the crash.
