From the trails to the skies

Hat Daze and Saddle Horse Holiday brings everything from parades and food to an airshow

There will be something for everyone this weekend as two area festivals — Hat Daze in Canby and the Saddle Horse Holiday in Lake Benton — make their return.

Organizers say they’re looking forward to seeing area residents come out for the return of the annual Father’s Day air show in Canby on Sunday.

“Last year was the first time in 14 years we didn’t have (a show),” said Canby Airport Manager Matt Wagner. In past years, the event usually drew crowds of a couple thousand people, he said.

The air show is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Sunday, but before that there’s also a Belgian waffle feed and burger feed, as well as opportunities to take airplane rides.

As far as the show goes, Wagner said, “We’ve got a really good lineup, with three aerobatic pilots.” He recommended spectators bring their lawn chairs and sunscreen.

There’s lots to do during Hat Daze too, including kids’ games, free movie showings at the Canby Theatre, and family-friendly events like the Field Day Fun Run on Saturday morning. Sponsored by Sanford Canby, the fun run is an event people of all ages can walk or run at their own pace. Family-friendly activities are set up along the route, to mix things up a little.

Lake Benton Saddle Horse Holiday

There’s always lots to enjoy for horse lovers at the Saddle Horse Holiday. This summer will mark the festival’s 75th year.

“It is spectacular to be getting back to normal this year,” said Karen Lichtsinn of the Lake Benton Area Chamber of Commerce. The Dakota-Minnesota Saddle Club will hold its traditional trail ride on Sunday morning, followed by a parade through Lake Benton and games on horseback on Horse Hill.

But even if you’re not in the saddle, there’s a lot to do this weekend. Scheduled events include polka music by the Larry Olsen band and fireworks tonight, a talent contest at the Lake Benton Opera House on Saturday, and family events both days.

Lichtsinn said local organizations will be holding fundraisers to help support the community. The American Legion and Auxiliary will be holding a baked chicken and pork chop fundraiser tonight, and on Saturday the “Bingo, brats and beer” fundraiser will help raise money to renovate Lakeside Park in Lake Benton.

“Back in the day, everyone had their family reunions and picnics there,” Lichtsinn said of the park. “We really think that is a real gem that needs to be improved.”
