Lakeview graduate dead, 5 injured in separate weekend accidents

COTTONWOOD — One young person died and five more were injured in separate accidents reported over the weekend in Lyon and Yellow Medicine Counties, area law enforcement said.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an ATV crash reported Saturday afternoon in Stanley Township. The operator of the ATV was identified as Parker Viaene of rural Cottonwood. Viaene was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash, the Sheriff’s Office said.

A total of five young men were also injured at a bonfire in rural Granite Falls over the weekend, the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office said. Three of the injured people, ages 18, 20 and 20, were airlifted for burn treatment.

The Sheriff’s Office received a call at 2:20 a.m. Sunday of multiple people injured at a bonfire. A flammable liquid was poured on the fire, which caused burns to people near the bonfire. One 18-year-old male was airlifted from the scene, and two 20-year-old males were transported to the Granite Falls airport and also airlifted, the Sheriff’s Office said. Two more males, ages 18 and 20, were treated for injuries at Avera Granite Falls. The Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office did not identify any of the people injured.

Viaene’s death has had an impact on the Lakeview community, said Superintendent Chris Fenske. Viaene was a member of the Lakeview High School graduating class of 2020, and has family members who are students and staff with the school as well, Fenske said.

“Death can be a difficult thing for us to understand, especially when it is sudden. The most important thing right now is that we care for and support each other,” Fenske said in a letter that went out to Lakeview families on Sunday night.

While the identities of the people hurt at the bonfire were not released Sunday, Fenske said the incident also involved past graduates.

Fenske said Lakeview staff were meeting on Sunday about the ATV crash and the bonfire accident. In the letter that went out to families, Fenske said crisis team members will be on hand at the school to support all those in need.

“We know these incidents are going to affect students of various ages as well as our staff,” he said the letter. “We would appreciate your thoughts and prayers for the families involved, the staff, the students, and the Lakeview School community during this difficult time.”
