3 hurt in crash involving State Patrol vehicle

HANLEY FALLS — Three people were injured, two of them seriously, in a crash involving a Minnesota State Patrol squad car on Sunday evening, the State Patrol said.

The squad car and a small SUV collided in the intersection of Minnesota Highway 23 and Yellow Medicine County Road 18 in Hanley Falls. The crash is under investigation, the State Patrol said.

The crash was reported at 5:17 p.m. Sunday. A 2013 Chevy Equinox driven by Leo Roy Kack, 88, of St. Leo, was westbound on County Road 18 at the time of the crash, and a squad car driven by Chad Patrick Nigg, 48, of Marshall, was southbound on Highway 23, approaching County Road 18 with emergency lights on, the State Patrol said. The SUV continued west through the intersection as the squad car was southbound on Highway 23.

The front of the squad car hit the passenger side of the SUV, the State Patrol said. The squad car braked and moved to the right in an attempt to avoid the crash, but both vehicles were totaled, the State Patrol said.

A passenger in the SUV, 83-year-old Audrey Marie Kack, was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center with serious, but non life-threatening injuries, the State Patrol said.

Leo Kack was transported to Avera Granite Falls and then transferred to Hennepin County Medical Center with injuries that were serious, but believed to be non life-threatening. Nigg was treated and released from Avera Granite Falls, the State Patrol said.

An investigation of the crash is ongoing.
