MARSHALL — It was a milestone day, and students at Park Side Elementary were celebrating how far they had come through the school year.

On Monday, Park Side marked the 100th day of school with special activities and visits from guests like the Marshall Tiger mascot.

Celebrating the 100th day of the school year is a tradition that started around 10-15 years ago, when there were a number of books for children written about the topic, said Park Side Principal Darci Love. Now, Park Side students and teachers use the day to celebrate being 100 days smarter, she said.

“It is a milestone that gives us an opportunity to use the number 100 to do fun activities about number and math concepts, patterns, counting, sorting and measuring,” Love said.

Of course, the day is also fun. The Marshall Tiger and “Zero the Hero,” played by Emily Carroll, visited each classroom to give fist bumps and elbow high-fives to students, and did a little dancing to celebrate the 100th day.

This year, the 100th day celebration also fell at the start of dress-up days for I Love to Read Month. This week, students will be dressing up for themes connected to Dr. Seuss books, like pajamas for “Dr. Seuss’s Sleep Book.”100 days in school
