Ghent wedding attendees asked to quarantine

Dept. of Health investigating cluster of COVID-19 cases from Aug. 22 wedding

MARSHALL — People who attended a wedding in Ghent last weekend are being asked to watch for COVID-19 symptoms, and in some cases to quarantine, Southwest Health and Human Services said Wednesday.

The Minnesota Department of Health and SWHHS are investigating a cluster of COVID-19 cases linked to a wedding, reception and dance at KB’s Bar and Grill in Ghent on Aug. 22. Because of the potential for a large number of people being infected at the event, health officials are recommending “strong measures” to limit the spread of coronavirus.

People who know they were in close contact with a wedding attendee who tested positive or had COVID-19 symptoms should quarantine for 14 days from their last contact with that person, SWHHS said. People who attended the wedding, reception or dance but don’t know whether they had close contact should still limit interactions with people for 14 days, and be careful about wearing a face mask and following social distancing.

A news release from SWHHS said several people in attendance at the wedding had symptoms and tested positive for COVID-19. The announcement didn’t give a specific number of cases, but did say it was likely that many more people at the event were exposed to the virus and could be infectious.

At this point it may be difficult to confirm a number of cases linked to the wedding, because attendees came from several different areas, said Ann Orren, community public health supervisor with SWHHS.

SWHHS is encouraging people who are concerned about possible exposure to COVID-19 to get tested. However, health officials say even if contacts of known COVID cases test negative, they still need to quarantine the full 14 days.

People who develop COVID-19 symptoms should get tested, SWHHS said. If you test positive for the virus, you will be asked to isolate for a period of time, until you are no longer considered infectious.
