Marshall Scouts invite youth to virtual camping event

MARSHALL — It started out as a way to meet badge requirements during a time of social distancing. But Cub Scout Pack 320’s experiment in “virtual” camping was such a hit, the boys wanted to try it again, parents said.

On Friday night, area Scouts will be hosting another virtual campout. This time, the event will be open to all area youth who’d like to participate by camping in their own yards while sharing photos and activities with fellow campers online.

“We wanted to do a second one because the kids had so much fun the first time,” said Colleen Ludwikowski, one of the Pack 320 organizers getting the campout together.

The way the virtual campout works is that kids camp out at home or with their family members. They each pitch a tent, cook supper and breakfast, and take part in a virtual campfire program with jokes and skits. Along the way, they can post photos or videos to share with other campers, Ludwikowski said.

This weekend’s campout will start at 4 p.m. Friday, with campsite setup and a virtual flag ceremony. Ludwikowski said activities will include a scavenger hunt, a video demonstration of how to make homemade ice cream, and knot-tying.

A lot of the coordinating of Pack 320’s first virtual campout happened over social media. Ludwikowski said organizers have also created an open event page for this weekend’s campout. More information on the campout, including a schedule of events, can be found at the Facebook event page, “Virtual Campout hosted by BSA Pack #320.”

Ludwikowski said organizers were looking forward to having kids participate in the campout, no matter where they are.
