Southview Elementary tops choices for new school name

MARSHALL — The results are in on a community survey to name the new school being built along Southview Drive — and over 400 people voted “Southview Elementary” as their top choice, Marhall Public Schools Superintendent Scott Monson said Monday.

At their regular meeting, members of the Marshall School Board heard the results of the online survey, which asked community members to weigh in on two possible names for the new elementary school. The survey went live two weeks ago after Marshall parents and school staff helped narrow down a list of potential names to two choices. In the community survey, responders were asked to pick their top choice of either “Tiger Elementary” or “Southview Elementary.”

Monson said a total of 776 people responded to the survey.

“Southview Elementary is the top choice from the survey,” with 473 people ranking it their first choice, Monson said. “Tiger Elementary” had 298 responders rank it as their top choice, he said.

School board members voted to approve Southview Elementary as the name of the new school.

“I want to thank Scott for doing the survey,” said school board member Sara Runchey. Having community support for the school’s new name was meaningful, she said.

Runchey said the bond oversight committee for the school building project is continuing to meet. The new school, which will replace West Side Elementary, is planned to be completed in fall 2021. So far, construction is on schedule, she said.
