Franco to face federal charges for re-entering the US

MINNEAPOLIS — A Guatemalan woman who was deported after she was convicted in a deadly 2008 school bus crash will now face federal charges for coming back to the United States.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Friday that Olga Marina Franco del Cid, 35, was indicted on charges of illegal re-entry, identification document fraud and false representation of a Social Security number.

Franco del Cid was convicted of nearly two dozen charges, including four counts of criminal vehicular homicide, for a crash where a minivan hit a school bus near Cottonwood. Four children were killed in the crash, and more people were injured. Franco del Cid served eight years in prison in Minnesota before being deported in 2016.

She was arrested in Inver Grove Heights on Nov. 26. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it had received a tip that Franco del Cid had re-entered the U.S. illegally. Illegal re-entry is a felony offense punishable by up to 20 years in federal prison.

In addition to illegal re-entry of the U.S., Franco del Cid is being charged with identification fraud for allegedly using a false Permanent Resident card, and Social Security fraud for falsely representing a Social Security number on an employment eligibility form, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Franco del Cid will appear in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis on Monday afternoon, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
