A ‘very big turnout’

Craft show is ‘biggest fundraiser in the year’ for Marshall girls hockey

MARSHALL — Bev Monke doesn’t waste a thing when it comes to art. Not even a button off a shirt.

The Canby resident took her pieces of art constructed with recycled items to the Red Baron Arena in Marshall on Saturday for the annual fall craft fair. Each of art pieces were framed and were on display at Monke’s table in the middle of the 150 booths set for vendors that were selling a large variety of art and crafts.

“It’s basically all recycled stuff. The frames are from thrift stores. I use everything from old jewelry to broken baskets, buttons, bottle caps and puzzle pieces,” Monke said.

“I always been interested in some aspect of art and this is what I ended up with.”

Carrie Mohr of Jackson also put her handmade craft items for sale. While she waited for potential customers to come by, she was working on weaving yarn into a hot pad using a loom.

“There are patterns you can follow. You can make up your own patterns that just guide you to what colors should be where. You end up with unique patterns, an unique look,” Mohr said.

She said Marshall is her first big show since started selling her craft items at vendor shows earlier this year.

According Marshall girls hockey coach Cassie Weiss, some of the proceeds and entry donations from the craft show go to the hockey program. The players and booster parents help run it.

“It’s been a very, very big turnout,” Weiss said. “The fall show gets a few more people than the spring (show) for some reason. People are ready to start decorating for fall and winter.”

Weiss said she went before the booster board before the spring show and proposed the girls hockey program operate the craft shows as a fundraiser for the program.

“It was a no-brainer for them,” Weiss said of the booster board. “It’s definitely our biggest fundraiser in the year. And we get to do it twice. It helps us with bus upgrades and whatever else we need through the hockey season.”
