Truck hits school bus in YM County, no injuries reported

YELLOW MEDICINE COUNTY — An Echo man was cited for multiple traffic violations after his pickup truck struck a school bus with 41 Lakeview School District students on board, the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office said.

No injuries were reported in the crash, but both the pickup and the bus received major damage, the Sheriff’s Office said.

At 3:50 p.m. Friday, the Sheriff’s office received a call of a two-vehicle crash involving a pickup truck and a Palmer Company school bus on Yellow Medicine County Road 8 in Friendship Township. The pickup, driven by Tracy Kocher, 41, was traveling south on County Road 8 when it drifted into the lane of the oncoming school bus, the Sheriff’s Office said. The bus driver, 64-year-old Claire Erickson of Cottonwood, tried to avoid the truck by going onto the edge of the road ditch, the Sheriffs’ Office said. The truck hit the bus on the driver’s side, the Sheriff’s Office said.

All 41 students on board the bus were checked for injuries at the scene, and had no injuries at that time, the Sheriff’s Office said. Erickson and Kocher were checked for injuries by ambulance staff, and also had no apparent injuries.

Kocher said he fell asleep at the wheel, and no other impairment was detected, the Sheriff’s Office said. Kocher was cited for multiple traffic violations, and the crash remains under investigation by the Sheriffs, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Clarkfield Ambulance, Granite Falls Ambulance, and the Minnesota State Patrol all responded at the crash scene.
