Hoping for a dry Box Car Days holiday weekend

TRACY — Tracy Chamber of Commerce Director Lexi Erickson remembers Labor Day last year well.

A rainstorm washed out the Box Car Days grand parade and those brave enough to dash over to the beer garden tent for cover ended up trapped inside.

“It was a wall of rain that you could see coming down the street,” Erickson said. “Some people made it to the beer tent. The water was coming through the floor and they were caught inside.”

Erickson is hoping for clearer skies this year.

“We are hoping and praying there is no rain this year,” she said.

Chances are pretty good that Erickson will get her wish granted.

The National Weather Service forecast for the region calls for a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Monday night, but sunny skies are forecasted during the day.

If that’s the case, the only people who may get wet are those competing in the mud volleyball tournament Sunday over by the Caboose restaurant. Erickson said 16 teams are signed up for the event that starts at 9 a.m. and continues throughout the day.

“They bring out some big machines and dig a couple feet into the ground and then fill it up with water. It’s cool, muddy and nasty,” Erickson said.

There are also some additions to Box Car Days. A “Zero” K fun run will be held Saturday starting with shotgun start at 3:45 p.m. at the beer garden tent. Erickson described the event as a mock run, that actually features a number of games.

“It’s no run, all fun,” she said.

The entry fee includes a T-shirt and beer garden ticket.

Besides the Midwest rides and concessions all weekend, inflatables and bungie trampolines have been added on Sunday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Hicktown Mafia is the featured band for the Saturday night street dance that starts at 9 p.m. The five-piece band plays classics and current country hits and classic ’70s, ’80s and ’90s rock.

The Hobo Band will perform in Monday’s grand parade and then proceed to the beer tent afterwards to play music for a hour.

Box Car Days start Friday at 5 p.m. with the Tracy Area Chamber Burger Night and the beer pong tournament starting at 8:30 p.m.
