A Luverne woman who was a recent graduate of Southwest Minnesota State University was killed in a crash that closed down part of Interstate 90 near Brandon, South Dakota, this week.

Brooke Thompson, 22, was a 2018 graduate of SMSU. Thompson was killed in a crash that involved four vehicles on Tuesday morning. The South Dakota Highway Patrol said charges are pending against the driver of a Peterbilt box truck involved in the crash.

The crash happened around 8 a.m. Tuesday, the Highway Patrol said. A 2014 Chevrolet Impala, a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a 2013 GMC Terrain were westbound on I-90, and were almost stopped as traffic merged into the passing lane in a road construction zone. The Peterbilt truck, driven by a 34-year-old man, moved into the passing lane and swerved back into the driving lane after hitting the GMC.

The truck rear-ended the Jeep, and pushed the Chevrolet into the grass median, the Highway Patrol said. The truck went into the median, across the eastbound lanes of I-90, and came to rest in the south ditch of the eastbound lanes.

Thompson was driving the Jeep. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the GMC, a 57-year-old woman, received serious non life-threatening injuries, and a passenger in the truck, a 34-year-old woman, received minor injuries, the Highway Patrol said. Both were transported by ambulance to a hospital in Sioux Falls.

A memorial was held for Thompson Wednesday night at the Blue Mound Skate Rink in Luverne, the Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported. Thompson had been figure skating at the rink ever since she was a child, and coached younger skaters as an adult.

Thompson was planning to attend graduate school at the University of South Dakota in August, the Argus Leader reported.
