Head-on crash injures four near Balaton

BALATON — Four people were injured, two of them seriously, in a head-on crash Thursday morning on Lyon County Road 5, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office said.

An 18-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy were transported by air from Avera Marshall Medical Center to hospitals in Sioux Falls, with serious or life-threatening injuries sustained in the crash.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash, with the assistance of the Minnesota State Patrol.

The crash was reported at 7:44 a.m. on Lyon County Road 5, about three miles north of Balaton, the Sheriff’s Office said. A vehicle driven by a 62-year-old man was northbound, and a vehicle driven by an 18-year-old woman was southbound at the time of the crash.

The road conditions at the time were wet, with areas of snow and slush on parts of the roadway, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Sheriff’s Office did not identify the people involved in the crash on Thursday. Both drivers, and two passengers in the southbound vehicle, were transported to Avera Marshall. The two passengers, an 18-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy, were then taken by air ambulance to Avera McKennan and Sanford Sioux Falls hospitals due to the seriousness of their injuries, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The State Patrol, Balaton Ambulance and Fire Department, Russell Fire Department and First Responders, North Memorial Ambulance and Tracy Ambulance all responded at the scene of the crash.
