Cottonwood issues ‘boil water’ advisory

COTTONWOOD — A water main break in Cottonwood caused the city to turn off its water temporarily on Wednesday, and residents are being advised to boil water before drinking it.

City staff were waiting for word from the Minnesota Department of Health before lifting the advisory, said Cottonwood City Administrator Teather Bliss.

Bliss said the city is responding to a water main break at the intersection of East First Street and Main Street. City staff weren’t able to find water valves that would isolate the broken part of the main, so they had to shut down the Cottonwood water tower for about an hour and a half on Wednesday, she said. Besides the temporary interruption of water service, Cottonwood also had a loss of water pressure.

“Because of that, as a precautionary measure, the Minnesota Department of Health and we requested a boil water advisory,” Bliss said. City water is safe to use, she said, but residents shouldn’t drink it without boiling it first.

The boil water advisory was being issued for 48 hours. Bliss said the city was waiting for more information from the Department of Health before lifting the advisory.

Cottonwood posted instructions for disinfecting drinking water on its city Facebook page Wednesday afternoon. Before using, water should be brought to a rolling boil for one minute, and allowed to cool.

Bliss said Al Olsen, Steve Alm and Jeseritz Construction all played important roles in responding to the water main break.

“They worked really hard, and they’ll be working into tonight,” Bliss said.
