Collapsed roof on garage surprises Marshall resident

Photo by Karin Elton The sun was shining on the contents of this garage on East Main Street Tuesday morning. The combination of rain and heavy snow caused the roof to collapse Friday night.

MARSHALL — When Ann Estrada looked out the window facing her backyard Saturday morning, she noticed something different about the garage roof.

It wasn’t there.

Some time Friday evening, her husband, Gustavo Estrada, said, the snow and rain must have worked together to give a fatal blow to the garage roof. They weren’t home at the time, he said.

“We were at the basketball tournament when it happened,” Estrada said. “When we arrived back Friday night, it was dark.”

The Estradas, who live on East Main Street, had gone to cheer on their daughter, Lenei Estrada, a Marshall High School junior, at the state basketball tournament in St. Paul.

Estrada said they didn’t use the garage to park their cars but as storage. Some items were damaged from the roof falling in.

“Several things were broken,” he said.

Since it happened he has been busy clearing the boards out and garage items that were broken or damaged from the snow and rain. He plans on renting a dumpster to haul out the debris. He called the insurance company and is waiting for the adjuster to come out. Estrada said he didn’t know yet if they are going to rebuild the garage or not.
