More snow on the way — but careful where you shovel

MARSHALL — Yet more snow is in the forecast for southwest Minnesota this weekend. And at the same time, the city of Marshall is urging residents to be careful of where they put the snow they clear off of sidewalks and driveways.

Marshall residents have had complaints about people removing snow from private property and putting it on the public right of way, or on city property, a Friday news release said. City staff said it’s against Marshall ordinances to put snow on a public street or on other city property, without making arrangements to remove it.

Any snow from private property that is put on a city street, boulevard or other city property must be moved onto private property or hauled away to a private disposal site.

If the snow isn’t removed from city property, the city will charge to have it removed, the release said.

“We understand the problems associated with the excessive amount of snow we have received this winter and the timing of the snow falls, but it is an issue we have to deal with,” the release said.

Several southwest Minnesota counties, including Lyon, Lincoln, and Murray County, are under a winter weather advisory from midnight tonight until 6 p.m. Sunday.

The National Weather Service office in Sioux Falls said snow accumulations of 3-5 inches are expected Saturday night through Sunday. Area residents should plan for slippery roads, the NWS said.

On the other hand, temperatures and wind chills in the area won’t be as severe this weekend as they were earlier in the week. NWS forecasts said low temperatures on Saturday and Sunday night will be above zero. While snow is predicted for Sunday, the daytime high temperature will be around 19 degrees.

Starting at $3.95/week.
