Streak of fire calls continues

Dryer fire creates smoke at The Gym, AJ’s Family Arcade

MARSHALL — For the fourth day in a row, firefighters responded to a call at a Marshall building, this time at The Gym of Marshall and AJ’s Family Arcade. A clothes dryer was the source of a fire Thursday afternoon, and while there was smoke in the building, there was no other damage.

Marshall Fire Chief Quentin Brunsvold said the fire was inside the drum of the dryer, although it wasn’t certain what started it. There was smoke in the building, but Brunsvold said there wasn’t damage other than an odor in the arcade area. He advised that the Gym sports bar could continue serving customers, but the arcade should be temporarily closed so it could be ventilated.

There weren’t any life-threatening injuries reported at the fire scene, said Dan DeSmet, manager of North Memorial Ambulance services in Marshall. However, there were some concerns about possible smoke irritation. One person was transported to Avera Marshall Medical Center, and one person went on their own, DeSmet said.

Thursday’s fire was the second this week related to a clothes dryer. A fire call at Marshall High School on Wednesday morning also involved a dryer, near the school’s kitchen area. While students and staff were temporarily evacuated from the school, Brunsvold said firefighters found only a small amount of smoke in the building.

There are fire safety precautions people should take with clothes dryers, Brunsvold said. A dryer’s lint trap or exhaust line are common areas for a fire to start. The two dryer fires this week didn’t start with the lint trap, but Brunsvold said it’s still important to make sure your dryer’s lint trap is clean. You should also make sure the dryer has an adequate exhaust, and keep it clean. Making sure items put in the dryer are clean can also help prevent fires, Brunsvold said.
