Fifth Street apartment fire was accidental

MARSHALL — The Aug. 18 fire that injured one person and displaced residents at a Marshall apartment building was accidental, officials said.

Marshall Fire Chief Quentin Brunsvold said the fire was caused by an accidental cooking fire.

The fire, reported around 7 p.m. at an apartment building on the 300 block of South Fifth Street, was investigated by the state fire marshal’s office.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found smoke billowing from a second floor window in the apartment building. The Marshall, Ghent and Lynd Fire Departments were able to contain the fire on the second floor. A 29-year-old man, who was a resident of the apartment where the fire started, was injured. Marshall Police said he was transported to a Sioux Falls burn unit for medical treatment. Other tenants were able to escape the building safely.

The fire displaced at least a dozen people from the apartments. Brunsvold said there was smoke and water damage in the majority of the apartment building. The American Red Cross was contacted to help seven adults and four children without temporary shelter after the fire.

Brunsvold said tenants were allowed in the building last week to retrieve some possessions.

Starting at $3.95/week.
