Derik Nelson and Family to perform inside middle school theater

MARSHALL — Derik Nelson and his siblings, Dalten and Riana, always loved making music together as a family and around the holidays when they were kids, they would put on special performances for family and friends at home dinner parties and other events.

Now they’re bringing their sibling harmonies to Marshall.

Derik Nelson and Family will perform at 7 p.m. Friday in the Marshall Middle School theater. The concert is part of the Marshall Area Fine Arts Council’s performance series.

The group has had over 3 million views on You Tube and toured over 40 locations across the West Coast to raise money for music education. Derik has appeared regularly as the lead guitarist on TV’s “Glee,” among other shows, according to a MAFAC news release. The siblings perform a mix of cover songs and original music written by Derik for their shows.

Riana Nelson said she learned to read and write very young and remembered writing and humming little songs and tunes. She and Derik always made up songs together, even at 4 and 5 years old. In kindergarten, Riana said her “I want to be a (blank) when I grow up” poster said “singer.”

“I think I always knew my life would take some kind of musical path but wasn’t sure what that would become,” she said. “Out of the three of us, I have dabbled the most in educational jobs, visual arts, and varied projects in a wide array of the arts, but singing is something I have always loved.”

Derik Nelson credits a lot of his interest in music to his mother.

“She always had music playing around the house and would be singing and dancing, and I was exposed to a lot of diverse styles of music and influential artists at a very early age, artists like Sting, Michael Jackson and Kenny Loggins were my big heroes growing up,” he said. “I also fell in love with the guitar playing of jazz virtuoso Pat Metheny.” When he was 14, Derik said his mother took him to a music store and helped him buy his first guitar.

Dalten Nelson was in his first musical at 4 years old.

“After being on stage that first time, I found that I loved performing and singing for people,” he said. “I even wrote my own musical for my senior culminating project in high school.”

In 2013, Derik took his band from college on tour to high schools across the West Coast to raise money for school arts and music programs. Riana was the band’s tour manager, and Dalten was the show’s technical director.

“He (Dalten) designed and built and ran all the tech components for our show including lights, sound and video displays,” Derik said. “Many audiences commented their favorite part of the show was when Dalten and Riana would come out on stage from backstage to perform a few acoustic songs with our sibling harmonies. After learning that audiences responded most favorably to the three-part harmony acoustic sibling songs, we decided there was an opportunity to focus on developing the singing sibling trio as its own artistic endeavor, and Derik Nelson and Family was ‘born.'”

Derik describes thee group’s sound as pop music that’s acoustic-based, with folk, jazz and rock influences, all with a focus on the three-part harmony sibling sound.

“There’s something special about sibling voices blending together,” Derik said. “I love the blend that’s possible when singing with family.”

Derik started on “Glee” at the end of Season 2 and continued as the lead guitarist in the New Directions until the show finished.

“It was my full-time job for over four years,” he said.

Derik said it was an honor to be involved with “Glee.”

“The cast and crew were some of the most hardworking people in the business, and I was lucky to learn and experience a lot,” he said. “Through working on ‘Glee,’ I also made connections, which provided me opportunities to work on films, recording sessions and other TV projects like ‘Modern Family,’ ‘New Girl’ and ‘Raising Hope.'”
