Murray County to sign deal for fireworks during festival

SLAYTON –The Murray County Board voted unanimously to agree to let the Fulda Area Community Club hire Pyrotechnic Display Inc., to shoot fireworks off at Seven Mile Park in Fulda during the Wood Duck Festival on June 16, with June 17 as a rain date.

The board approved board chair James Jens to sign the letter of agreement to that effect at Tuesday’s board meeting.

“The community club has hired them before,” Parks Director Justin Hoffmann said. “Since they shoot them off from the county park in Fulda, they get the county’s permission.”

Hoffman also presented a couple other requests to the board that were also approved.

It was moved by Commissioner Glenn Kluis seconded by Magnus and passed to approve hiring David A. Swenson Construction to continue the catch fence around turns one and two of the racetrack of 350 feet at a cost not to exceed $11,000 for labor and concrete and $5,000 for material.

The first was to construct a racetrack catch fence from the parking lot to Juniper Avenue. The track is close to the public school in Slayton and with the school expansion, this summer, the plan is to put a road between the school grounds and the race track, Hoffmann said.

“We want to extend the catch fence to protect drivers and walkers on the new road from being hit by any flying tires or car parts during races,” Hoffmann said.

The county would only need to pay the David A. Swenson Construction Company $11,000 for labor and concrete, Hoffmann said. The rest of the materials were already available, he said.

Secondly, Hoffmann sought board approval to go out for bids on updating two buildings on the Murray County Fairgrounds. At first, he had included the two structures in one funding request, but the board suggested he split them out so that the smaller of the two wouldn’t have to wait through the bid process.

The smaller job was to put ends and doors on the hoop barn for which $3,800 had been Consensus for Hoffman to obtain quotes for the hoop barn repairs. Hoffmann was directed to get quotes for the hoop barn, he said.

The other was for the blue commercial building on the fairgrounds, which also needed steel walls.

It was moved by Commissioner Dave Thiner, seconded by Commissioner Lori Gunnink and passed to approve going out for bids for work to be done on the blue commercial building at the fairgrounds and to set the bid opening for 10:30 a.m. on April 17.

Other items approved on the day include:

• Shelly Lewis, Craig Christensen and Mona Henkels met with the County Board and gave a Soil and Water update. It was moved by Thiner, seconded by Kluis and passed to approve Soil and Water Conservation District’s 2018 first quarter appropriation in the amount of $46,569.75.

• It was unanimously approved to have the board chair sign the 2018 SEH engineering contract for the demo landfill.

Starting at $3.95/week.
