Hearings postponed for sex sting suspects

Hearings for two Lyon County men arrested in an underage prostitution sting have been continued or rescheduled for October, Brown County District Court records said.

A Sept. 12 hearing for Paul Lund, Jr., 46, of Cottonwood, was canceled, and another hearing date set for Oct. 3, court records said. A Sept. 26 hearing for Lawrence Depyper, 70, of Lynd, was continued to Oct. 16.

Depyper and Lund were two of a total of eight men arrested in August, after a prostitution sting operation was held in Springfield by the Brown County Sheriff’s Department. As part of the sting, undercover investigators acted as 16-year-old girls offering to trade sex for money or drugs.

Both Lund and Depyper were charged with agreeing to hire a person under 18 for prostitution. A criminal complaint against Lund alleges he responded to an advertisement law enforcement posted on Backpage.com and arrived at an undercover location at a residence in Brown County.

Brown County court documents said a Sept. 12 hearing for Lund was canceled, and the time constraints for scheduling hearings in his case were waived. An omnibus hearing was scheduled for Oct. 3. At an omnibus hearing, the court decides whether there is probable cause to pursue criminal charges in a case, and examines what evidence would be admissible in court.

A criminal complaint against Depyper alleges he called and texted an undercover agent posing as a 16-year-old girl and was arrested after arriving at a designated location and being invited inside.

Brown County court documents said a Sept. 26 hearing for Depyper was held but was continued to a later date. Court records said Depyper’s application for a public defender had been denied. At the hearing, Depyper said he wasn’t sure what to do about getting an attorney, court minutes said. Depyper said he also needed to request to see and review the evidence in his case, court minutes said.

Court records said Depyper’s hearing would continue on Oct. 16.
