Going back in time

True Light students dress up like old-time characters

MARSHALL — Time Capsule Day — part of the March reading month activities — brought out a variety of creative and festive outfits on Thursday at True Light Christian School.

Students were asked to find their favorite old-time author or book and dress appropriately for that time period.

Eighth-grader Rose Hanson — clad in all black, including a black hat with two peacock feathers atop of it — called her persona Victoria Black.

“I’m wearing all black and I chose the Victorian era because they all have those tea cups and those puffy skirts and the beautiful hats,” Hanson said. “I just really like that era. I have read books on that kind of thing, and I just love their style, like the curtain, the rooms and the skirts with the patterns on them.”

Seventh-grader Eden Knudson decided to have a little fun with the dress-up day.

“My sister had a poodle skirt from dinner theater last year, so I just decided to wear it,” Knudson said. “The era is from the 1950s.”

Eight of the fifth-graders also opted to take part in Time Capsule Day. Four of them were nicely dressed as one of the “Little House on the Prairie” characters, which isn’t surprising since the “Little House” books are some of the most beloved children’s books of all time.

“I’m Laura Ingalls,” fifth-grader Gracelyn Foster said. “I just had the stuff for it.”

Siri Christensen also chose Laura, especially because of convenience.

“I got my dress on vacation one time,” Christensen said. “I don’t remember where, though.”

Laura Ingalls Wilder was also represented by Aaliyah Fricke.

“I got my outfit from Siri,” Fricke said. “I just like the time period. It’s just really cool.”

Grace Bump also chose the late 1800s for her character.

“I’m like Laura Ingalls Wilder, but I’m Mary Ingalls,” Bump said. “I’ve read some of the Little House books, and my friend Lydia braided my hair.”

Fifth-grader Jada Falconer, who said she likes reading, came to school dressed as Little Bo Peep.

“I was originally going to be Nellie Olson, but I decided to be Little Bo Peep because I look more like that,” Falconer said. “My mom bought the dress for me on my birthday eve.”

Oakley Knochenmus had the tough-guy cowboy look going on.

“I’m probably Clint Eastwood or Roy Rogers or William Rogers,” Knochenmus said. “I just kind of like that time period and I like their movies. This hat was originally my grandpa’s.”

Brenna Foster looked fierce in her pirate costume.

“I’ve read pirate books,” she said. “I found this outfit in my basement.”

While Jude Knudson couldn’t find a costume to wear, he opted to wear attire that flashed back to the early 1990s.

“This jacket is my dad’s (Jim Knudson),” Jude Knudson said. “He graduated in 1992. I really didn’t have anything else.”

True Light students and staff have quite a few more opportunities to participate in activities that highlight reading this month. Next Thursday is Mystery/Detective Dress-up Day, followed by Pjs and Popcorn on Friday, March 24, and Sports Day on Thursday, March 30.

In-classroom activities also include book bingo, an ice cream sundae party for bingo winners, author studies, parent readers, grades 1-8 buddy reading, poster making and cake.
