Lanes will go dark at Marshall Bowl

MARSHALL – The lanes were popular for league bowling, special events, or just as a place to have fun in general. But the Marshall Bowl bowling alley will be shutting its doors at the end of the month, owner Bruce Shover said Wednesday.

Shover said Marshall Bowl will close June 1.

“It’s not for any one particular reason,” Shover said of the decision.

He said a combination of costs, including assessments for street work outside the bowling alley, increases in minimum wage set to take effect in August, and legal costs, would make it difficult for the business to survive. Marshall Bowl is one of several Marshall businesses being sued by a nonprofit group alleging lack of compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act.

Shover said he was also facing some health-related concerns that meant he couldn’t keep running the bowling alley.

“I’ll sell it if anyone wants it,” he said. Marshall Bowl has been for sale for three years, he said.

Shover said the hard thing about closing the Marshall Bowl would be missing the people who came in.

“I love ’em all,” Shover said.

He said Marshall Bowl had 200 league bowlers and about as many league volleyball players at the business’ outdoor volleyball court.

Marshall Bowl also gave away free games of bowling for area kids, and hosted clubs and special events.

Shover said he is working with Cam Bailey of Marshall Community Services to try and keep league volleyball going.

Starting at $3.95/week.
