US sanctions Rwanda’s military

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — The U.S. imposes new sanctions on Rwanda’s military and four top commanders over support for the M23 rebel group in eastern Congo. On Monday, the U.S. Treasury Department targets the Rwandan Defence Forces and senior officials. The U.S. says M23’s attacks rely on active backing from Rwanda. The move follows a U.S.-mediated peace deal signed in December by Congo and Rwanda in Washington. Days before, M23 captured Uvira and people die. The U.N. says the fighting has displaced more than seven million. Rwanda rejects the sanctions and blames Congo for violating the agreement.
