Ghana navy, air force rescue 71 fishermen
ACCRA, Ghana (AP) — Ghana’s navy and air force rescue 71 fishermen after gunmen attacked and robbed their boats off the country’s coast. A local official says the attackers struck late Wednesday in the Central Region. The military rescued the fishermen on Thursday morning. The official said doctors checked them and discharged them from the hospital. Authorities say an investigation is ongoing. Earlier Thursday, the navy and air force said they run a search-and-rescue operation near Senya Bereku. They urge people to stay calm. The Gulf of Guinea has a long record of piracy, though the U.N. says attacks have fallen since 2021.
