Father, son killed by mudslide in Peru
LIMA, Peru (AP) — Peruvian authorities say intense rains in the south have triggered deadly mudslides and major damage in the city of Arequipa. Officials say Monday they located the bodies of a father and son who were swept away in a landslide. Authorities say the rains have affected about 5,500 homes and forced many people to evacuate. Experts say some homes sit on an ancient natural watercourse that carries torrents of water during heavy rains. Local leaders urge the country’s interim president to declare a state of emergency. The regional governor says shelters are opening and aid is being distributed. Forecasters link the rains to El Niño Costero and warming Pacific waters.
