Vietnam storm deaths rise to 64 as a bridge collapses and flooding sweeps away a bus
HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — A bridge collapsed and a bus was swept away by flooding in Vietnam, raising the death toll there to at least 64 from a typhoon and subsequent heavy rains. State media say nine people died on Saturday after Typhoon Yagi made landfall in Vietnam before weakening into a tropical depression. The rest died in floods and landslides that followed on Sunday and Monday. A bus carrying 20 people was swept into a flooded stream by a landslide on Monday morning. State media say four bodies were recovered and 15 others are still missing. Elsewhere, a steel bridge collapsed, leaving 13 people missing. The storm earlier caused 20 deaths in the Philippines and four in China.
Iranian missiles in Russia are a legitimate target, a Ukrainian official says
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A senior Ukrainian official says Western partner countries must allow Ukraine to use weapons they have supplied to strike military warehouses inside Russia because of strong suspicions Iran has provided ballistic missiles for the Kremlin’s war effort. Two people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press at the weekend that the United States has told allies it believes Iran has sent short-range ballistic missiles to Russia for its war in Ukraine. Western countries supporting Ukraine have hesitated to let its military strike targets on Russian soil, fearing they could be sucked into Europe’s biggest conflict since World War II. But the head of the Ukrainian presidential office said Monday that “protection is not escalation.”
Syria says Israeli strikes kill 18 people in a large-scale attack on sites
MASYAF, Syria (AP) — Syria’s health minister says the number of people killed in overnight Israeli strikes has risen to 18, with dozens more wounded. It’s the largest death toll in such an attack since the beginning of the war in Gaza 11 months ago. Israel regularly targets military sites in Syria linked to Iran and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. But the intensity and death toll of Sunday night’s strikes were unusual. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military. Israel has vowed to stop Iranian entrenchment in Syria, particularly since Syria is a key route for Iran to send weapons to Hezbollah.
47 inmates escape from a prison in Liberia
MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) — Authorities in Liberia say that dozens of inmates have escaped from a maximum security prison outside the country’s capital over the weekend. The Justice Ministry said in a statement on Monday that the initial investigations found that the inmates were able to escape the prison in Kakata because of a breach in the prison security system. Prisons in Liberia are often severely overcrowded and inmates lack access to enough food and basic medical care.
