Ukrainian officials say Russian shelling killed a 91-year-old woman
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian shells struck residential areas of Ukraine’s southern Kherson region, killing a 91-year-old woman in what a local official described Monday as a terrifying night in the 20-month war that shows no signs of ending. The overnight shelling set fire to a high-rise apartment building, blew out windows and reduced some apartments to rubble, according to video footage posted by Kherson Gov. Oleksandr Prokudin. The woman died when an apartment wall fell on her, according to her daughter, who lived with her on the ninth floor. Prokudin said it was a “terrifying night” for some Kherson residents.
3 foreigners confirmed among 45 dead from Hurricane Otis in Mexico
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Three foreign residents were among at least 45 people killed when Hurricane Otis hit Mexico’s resort city of Acapulco last week, officials said Monday, as the continuing search for the missing focused on submerged boats Those confirmed dead included one American, one Canadian and one person from England, all of whom had been living in Acapulco for some time and were not considered tourists, local prosecutors said. Meanwhile, the Navy said search efforts would now focus on finding possible bodies among the 29 boats known to have sunk in Acapulco Bay the night the hurricane hit.
A 5.4 magnitude earthquake shakes Jamaica with no reports of casualties
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A 5.4 magnitude earthquake hit Jamaica on Monday, prompting people to flee buildings amid heavy shaking that knocked out power in some areas but appeared to cause no serious damage. Food, wine bottles and other items tumbled off the shelves in grocery stores and some minor damage to buildings was reported. The tremor’s epicenter was about 2 miles west-northwest of Hope Bay in northeastern Jamaica, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It occurred at a shallow depth of 6 miles.
van der Sloot is sent back to Peru after US trial and confession in Holloway killing
LIMA, Peru (AP) — A Dutch citizen who recently admitted to killing U.S. student Natalee Holloway in Aruba in 2005 is being sent back from the United States to Peru where he will serve out a sentence for the killing of a Peruvian woman. Joran van der Sloot arrived Monday afternoon in the Peruvian capital of Lima, Interpol agent Hilda Manosalva told The Associated Press. Van der Sloot was temporarily extradited to the U.S. to face charges linked to Holloway’s disappearance, a case that has drawn international attention over the course of two decades.
