2 workers at Fukushima plant hospitalized after accidentally getting sprayed
TOKYO (AP) -- Two workers at the tsunami-wrecked Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant were hospitalized after accidentally getting sprayed with liquid laced with radioactive materials, officials said Thursday. The incident occurred on Wednesday when a group of workers was cleaning the piping at the Advanced Liquid Processing System. The ALPS is a wastewater filtering facility that is key to the treatment of the radioactive wastewater that accumulates on the plant and its ongoing discharge into the sea.
María Corina Machado is winner of Venezuela's opposition primary
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- Venezuelan government critic María Corina Machado was declared the winner Thursday of an opposition-organized primary to choose a presidential candidate, in polling last weekend that was denounced by the self-proclaimed socialist government as illegitimate. The voting Sunday organized by the National Primary Commission drew more than 2.4 million voters in Venezuela and abroad and was aimed at choosing a candidate to run against President Nicolás Maduro next year.
EU presses the leaders of Serbia and Kosovo to set enmity behind them
BRUSSELS (AP) -- The European Union on Thursday ramped up pressure on Serbia and Kosovo to normalize their relations by enlisting the leaders of three heavyweight member countries and senior officials to make a major push to get the former war foes to set aside decades of differences. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Prime Minister Albin Kurti distrust each other and were not expected to meet face to face. But they did hold talks separately with the leaders of France, Germany and Italy, plus the two EU officials supervising a stuttering "dialogue" between them.
Taliban free Afghan activist arrested 7 months ago
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- The Taliban have freed an Afghan activist who campaigned for the education of girls, a local nonprofit organization said Thursday. Matiullah Wesa was arrested seven months ago and spent 215 days in prison, according to the group, Pen Path. Wesa has been outspoken in his demands for girls to have the right to go to school and repeatedly called on the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan to reverse its bans on female education. Since their takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban have barred girls from school beyond the sixth grade.
