Passenger trains derail in India, killing at least 50, trapping many others
NEW DELHI (AP) -- Two passenger trains derailed in India on Friday, killing at least 50 people and trapping hundreds of others inside more than a dozen damaged coaches, officials said. About 400 people were taken to hospitals after the accident, which happened in eastern India, about 137 miles southwest of Kolkata, officials said. The cause was under investigation. Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde, the top administrator in the Balasore district, said at least 50 people were dead.
Panama launches operation in Darien jungle targeting organized crime
NICANOR, Panama (AP) -- Panama launched a security operation along its shared border with Colombia on Friday to combat criminal gangs and migrant smugglers involved in record-setting migration through the perilous Darien Gap this year. Security officials said Operation Shield is part of the agreement reached with the governments of Colombia and the United States in April to stop the flow of migrants through the border's jungle-clad mountains. Panama will use previously U.S.-donated helicopters to increase aerial patrols of the largely roadless region, but stressed that it was a Panamanian operation.
Clashes in Senegal kill at least 9; government bans social media platforms
DAKAR, Senegal (AP) -- Clashes between police and supporters of Senegalese opposition leader Ousmane Sonko left nine people dead, the government said Friday, with authorities issuing a blanket ban on the use of several social media platforms in the aftermath of the violence. The deaths occurred mainly in the capital, Dakar, and the city of Ziguinchor in the south, where Sonko is mayor, Interior Minister Antoine Felix Abdoulaye Diome said in a statement. Some social media sites used by demonstrators to incite violence, such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter have been suspended, he said.
British teen reported to anti-terror police by mother gets life sentence
LONDON (AP) -- A teenage man who was reported to British anti-terror authorities by his mother was jailed for life on Friday. Matthew King, 19, will serve a minimum term of six years for plotting a terror attack on police officers or soldiers. In what was the first terror sentencing in England and Wales to be televised, the judge praised King's mother for taking her suspicions to the Prevent counter-terror program. "She took the very bold step of alerting Prevent when she had concerns for her son," Judge Mark Lucraft said during sentencing at the Old Bailey, the central criminal court in central London.
