3 dead in shooting outside Fla. Wendy’s

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A shooter opened fire in the drive-thru area of a Wendy’s restaurant early Tuesday in suburban Fort Lauderdale, killing three people before fleeing, police said. Hallandale Beach police have released few details, but said the victims were not restaurant employees. No names were immediately released. Witnesses said they heard about 10 shots shortly before 1 a.m. “It was boom, boom, boom. It was quick,” Perk Fargo told local TV stations. Police Capt. Megan Jones said detectives were reviewing security video to discover what led to the shooting, but they do not believe it was a random attack. “We don’t believe that there is anyone out there intending to do additional harm to the public,” Jones said.

Google to spend $2.1B on acquisition

NEW YORK (AP) — Google is planning to buy New York City’s St. John’s Terminal for $2.1 billion, making it the anchor of its Hudson Square campus. The announcement Tuesday arrives with the city buffeted by the pandemic and most offices still largely unpopulated. While CEO Sundar Pichai said in a blog post late last month that Google is delaying its global return to offices until Jan. 10, the commitment by the company to further invest in New York City real estate was trumpeted both by Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio, who called it “one of the shots in the arm we need as part of our comeback.” “Google is leading the way here in our economic comeback but also further asserting what we know more and more: New York City is now one of the great tech capitals in the world,” de Blasio said at a virtual news conference Tuesday.

Ex-mayor,gets 6 years in corruption case

BOSTON (AP) — A former Massachusetts mayor, once a rising Democratic star after being elected at just 23 years old, was sentenced to six years in prison on Tuesday after being convicted of extorting hundreds of thousands of dollars from marijuana businesses that wanted to operate in his city. The judge handed down the punishment for ex-Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia after tossing several convictions stemming from allegations that the now 29-year-old swindled investors who backed a smartphone app he created. Correia’s family members in the courtroom wept as U.S. District Judge Douglas Woodlock described his actions as old-style and crude corruption that “eviscerates” a community. “City Hall was for sale,” the judge said. Correia, who has insisted that he’s innocent and that the “real truth” will eventually come out, did not make a statement during the hearing in Boston federal court because he is still challenging his remaining convictions.
