Melissa Scotting, CNP, Avera Medical Group Marshall, and Danielle Welvaert, RN, Avera Marshall Labor and Delivery Unit, have recently completed Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) certification. This certification from the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice demonstrates they have the skills and knowledge to provide breastfeeding counseling and support. Earning the certification required them to complete a minimum of 45 hours of training and pass an exam.
Scotting was influenced to pursue certification because of the strong evidence that breastfeeding offers many health benefits for babies. "Research shows that breastfeeding offers complete nutrition for babies. It can boost the infant's immune system and build IQ. Plus, it is affordable and always available. It really is the best choice for babies," she said.
Avera Marshall Chief Nursing Officer Dodie Derynck says this added expertise will provide a significant benefit for families. "We've always supported families with lactation education and guidance. All of our RNs in our Labor and Delivery Unit are knowledgeable about breastfeeding and equipped to offer education for families. Having members of our team achieve this certification deepens our level of evidence-based expertise," Derynck said. "Having an advance practice professional with this certification also allows us to offer follow-up appointments in the clinic for families after they've gone home from the hospital."
Scotting provides visits to new moms in the hospital to offer guidance and answer breastfeeding questions. She also offers education and support before and after delivery by appointment at Avera Medical Group Marshall. Welvaert provides education and support in her role as a direct care RN in Avera Marshall's Labor and Delivery Unit.
