Southwest Minnesota State University, in partnership with Marshall Community Services and P.S. Productions, will host for the annual productions by the SMSU children’s theater on Friday, June 14 and the high school theater workshop on Friday, June 14, and Saturday, June 15.

Led by SMSU Theater Professor Sheila Tabaka since 2018, the SMSU children’s theater workshop provides acting, production, and costuming opportunities for grades 3-8 and for grades 9-12 through the high school theater workshop every summer.

The children’s theater, in conjunction with Marshall Community Services, has been working on the production of Disney’s “The Lion King Kids” with music and lyrics by Elton John and Tim Rice; additional music and lyrics by Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and Hans Zimmer. Based on the book by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi. The show is based on the Broadway production directed by Julie Taymor and shown with permission from The Walt Disney Company.

The high school workshop has been preparing for their production of “Dr. Experimentor and the League of Evil” by Charlotte Nixon, presented in conjunction with the Marshall Community Services and P.S. Productions by permission from Pioneer Drama Service.

The SMSU children’s theater workshop presents Disney’s “The Lion King Kids” on Friday, June 14, at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., and 6:30 p.m. The high school workshop presents “Dr. Experimentor and the League of Evil” on Friday, June 14, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, June 15, at 1 p.m. Admission for all shows is “pay what you can” at the door. All performances are in the SMSU Fine Arts Theatre.
